The T 2 entered JASDF service in 1975 with 4 Air Wing with the first unit 21 Hikotai Squadron becoming fully operational on 1 October 1976 and the second squadron 22 Hikotai following on 5 April 1978 both Squadrons relinquishing their F 86 Sabres advanced training aircraft.  The T 2 was retired in 2006 and 22 Squadron inactivated.
