The Air Force of the Ukrainian People’s Republic 29 March 1917. Ukraine became Soviet and its Air Force disbanded 18 March 1921. As part of the Soviet Union Ukrainians served in the Soviet Armed Forces.

Ukraine retained its Soviet-era military equipment when the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991.  After Ukrainian independence Ukrainian Air Force, as a service branch of the post Soviet Armed Forces was established on 17 March 1992. Limited investment left equipment unmaintained and obsolete.

The Russian takeover of Crimea and the start of the Donbas war in 2014 was the catalyst for replacing poor equipment and poor leadership. Russia began a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022. Force modernisation and massive expansion of the forces continue based on Western material supplies and tactics as well as local Ukrainian innovation.
