To protect the country and its neutrality Military Forces have the Army and the Air Force service branches.

The Military retains a small cadre of Regular soldiers. The rest remain conscripts or volunteers

Switzerland escaped invasion during WWI by the Mobilization of 1914.

The growing threat by Nazi Germany led to Mobilization for WWII. This again helped prevent invasion.

To secure the main lakes on Switzerland's borders the Army introduced its Maritime branch in 1939

A flotila of armed military patrol boats deployed to Lakes Geneva, Lucerne, Lugano, Maggiore and Constance. Thet are also responsible for search and rescue

1950s defence focussed on the possible invasion by the Soviet Union and defence against nuclear warfare.

The threat of land invasion reduced with the end of the Cold War. Focus changed to prioritise defence of Swiss airspace in 1995. Force modernisation was undertaken.

Founded 3 May 1920 during Turkish War of Independance WWII - Initially Turkey remained neutral. Turkey joined the Allies declaring war against Germany and Japan on 23 February 1945 gaining a seat ot the UN. Korean War - As a UN Member state Turkey deployed the Turkish Brigade North Star to South Korea on 19 October 1950 NATO - Turkey joined NATO on 18 February 1952 Cyprus - Following the 1974 Cypriot coup d'état Turkey invaded Cyprus on 20 July 1974 with an amphibious and airborne assault operation. Turkey ended in control of the northern part of Cyprus after front lines solidified. UN Forces patrolled the contact lines with efforts for settlement continuing. Balkans - Turkey contributed to UN Peacekeeping force Bosnia 1992 and Kosovo 1998. PKK - Protracted campaign against PKK inside Turkey and Syria Afghanistan - With the Al-Qaeda Istanbul Bombings 2003 Turkey began sending forces to ISAF to fight Taliban. Ukraine’s navy includes its own Naval Aviation

Army Air Force of the Ukrainian People’s Republic 29 March 1917. Allied to Poland during Polish-Soviet war. Failed to take Kiev from the Bolsheviks. With peace Ukraine became Soviet and the Army and Air Force disbanded 18 March 1921. As part of the Soviet Union Ukrainians served in the Soviet Armed Forces.

Ukraine retained its Soviet-era military equipment when the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991. After Ukrainian independence Ukrainian Military Forces were formally established on 6 December 1991. Limited investment left equipment unmaintained and obsolete.

The Russian takeover of Crimea and the start of the Donbas war in 2014 was the catalyst for replacing poor equipment and poor leadership. Russia began a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022. Force modernisation and massive expansion of the forces continue based on Western material supplies and tactics as well as local Ukrainian innovation.
