Turkish Air Force Patches Türk Hava Kuvvetleri TuAF Founded as the Army Aviation Squadrons by the Ottoman Empire 1 June 1911.Naval Aviation Squadrons equipping with seaplanes founded in 1914. The Ottoman Empire suffered defeat in WWI and the War of Independace started in 1919. The Turkish Armed Forces including Air Force as a branch was founded on 23 April 1920. Redesignated Turkish Air Command Corps Scale on 31 January 1944 and to Turkish Air Command Corps Scale on 1 July 1949. NATO membership of NATO in 1952 led to the accellerating of modernization. Conducted combat operations during the invasion of Cyprus uncluding with newly received F 4 Phantom II aircraft. Started receiving F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter aircraft in 1987. Joined NATO Operations over Bosnia 1995 and 1999 2001 Undertook NATO Baltic Air Policing 2006 Multiple aerial raids against the PKK in Iraq in 2011 and in 2013 began striking ISIL targets in Syria and Iraq. Further operations include Operation Euphrates Shield (2016–2017), Operation Olive Branch (2018–2019), Operation Peace Spring (2019). Continuw with Turkish intervention in Libya (2020), Operation Spring Shield (2020), and Operation Claw Sword (2022).
