Patch Description
This original Chilean Air Force (Fuerza Aérea de Chile – FACh) II Air Brigade patch dates from the 1980s. Embroidered on yellow twill with a cut edge and Velcro backing, it represents the II Brigada Aérea, then headquartered at Los Cerrillos Air Base in Santiago.
The badge features a soaring Andean condor, Chile’s national bird and an enduring symbol of strength, vigilance and mastery of the skies. The condor has long appeared in Chilean military insignia and reflects the Air Force’s responsibility for defending the nation’s extensive airspace stretching from the Atacama Desert to Patagonia.
During the 1980s, II Air Brigade was one of the Chilean Air Force’s principal operational formations. Operating from Los Cerrillos Air Base, it was responsible for air operations across central Chile and controlled a diverse mix of reconnaissance, electronic warfare, transport and advanced flying training units.
The Brigade’s Grupo 2 operated English Electric Canberra PR.9 reconnaissance aircraft together with Beech 99A electronic warfare aircraft. Grupo 10, based at nearby Pudahuel Airport, served as the Chilean Air Force’s primary transport unit, while Grupo 11 provided refresher training for aircrew and operated the famous Los Halcones aerobatic team using the Extra 300. The Brigade also controlled the Servicio Aéreo de Fotogrametría (SAF), operating Learjet 35A aircraft for aerial survey and photographic mapping missions.
This patch represents an important Cold War period in Chilean military aviation when II Air Brigade combined reconnaissance, transport, electronic warfare and flying training capabilities within a single command. Original Chilean Air Force patches from this era are becoming increasingly difficult to find and are highly desirable among collectors of South American military aviation and Cold War insignia
