Patch History

This original Belgian Air Force 8 Squadron Mirage 5B patch dates from the late 1980s, when 8 Squadron formed part of 3 Tactical Wing and operated the Dassault Mirage 5 as one of Belgium’s frontline NATO tactical fighter units.

The patch is uniquely shaped to represent the distinctive delta wing planform of the Mirage 5, making it one of the more unusual Belgian Air Force squadron patches produced during the Cold War. At its centre is the official 8 Squadron emblem embroidered on a blue shield, while the inscription “Mirage 5-B” identifies the aircraft that served as the squadron’s principal combat aircraft.

The patch is embroidered on black felt with silver thread and a cut edge, typical of Belgian Air Force squadron insignia produced during the period. Its distinctive aircraft-shaped design makes it particularly desirable among collectors of Mirage aircraft, Belgian military aviation and NATO Cold War memorabilia.

Original 8 Squadron Mirage 5B patches are increasingly difficult to find and represent an important period in the history of the Belgian Air Force before the introduction of the F-16 Fighting Falcon

Based at Bierset Air Base, 8 Squadron flew the Dassault Mirage 5BA, Belgium’s single-seat tactical strike variant developed from the successful Mirage III. Designed for high-speed, low-level attack missions, the Mirage 5 became the backbone of the Belgian Air Force’s conventional strike capability throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

As part of 3 Tactical Wing, 8 Squadron maintained NATO operational readiness through regular multinational exercises and deployments across Western Europe. The squadron trained alongside allied air forces to develop interoperability and ensure Belgium could contribute effectively to NATO’s collective defence during the closing years of the Cold War.
