Patch History
This original Belgian Air Force 2 Squadron 70th Anniversary patch commemorates the 70th anniversary of 2 Squadron in 1987. At the time, the squadron formed part of 2 Tactical Wing and operated the Dassault Mirage 5 from Beauvechain Air Base, Belgium, as one of NATO’s frontline tactical fighter units.
The design celebrates the squadron’s heritage by combining two aircraft that served seventy years apart. The upper aircraft represents the squadron’s First World War origins in 1917, while the lower aircraft depicts the Dassault Mirage 5, the aircraft flown by 2 Squadron during the final years of the Cold War. The years 1917 and 1987 mark seven decades of continuous operational service.
Anniversary patches such as this were produced in limited numbers to commemorate important milestones in squadron history and were typically issued to serving personnel and participants. Today they are highly sought after by collectors of Belgian Air Force, NATO and Cold War military aviation memorabilia.
This 2 Squadron 70th Anniversary patch is an excellent example of Belgian military aviation heritage, linking the squadron’s First World War beginnings with its modern Mirage 5 operations during the Cold War.

Originally formed during the First World War, 2 Squadron became one of Belgium’s longest-serving fighter units. Throughout the Cold War, the squadron played a vital role in NATO’s collective defence, maintaining a high level of operational readiness and regularly participating in multinational exercises across Europe.
The Mirage 5 entered Belgian Air Force service during the early 1970s and became the country’s principal tactical strike aircraft. Designed for high-speed, low-level attack missions, it provided Belgium with an effective conventional strike capability while supporting NATO’s deterrence strategy throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
