Patch History

This original Belgian Air Force 1 Squadron “Seventy Years Thistle” patch commemorates the 70th anniversary of 1 Squadron in 1986. At the time, the squadron formed part of 2 Tactical Wing and operated the Dassault Mirage 5 from Beauvechain Air Base, Belgium, as one of NATO’s frontline tactical fighter units.

The design combines the distinctive silhouette of the Mirage 5 with the squadron’s famous Scottish thistle emblem. The thistle reflects the squadron’s origins during the First World War, when Belgian personnel serving alongside the Royal Flying Corps adopted the symbol that has remained part of the unit’s identity for more than a century. Around the border appears the Latin motto “Nemo Me Impune Lacessit” (“No one attacks me with impunity”), a phrase traditionally associated with the Scottish thistle and symbolising strength, determination and defence.

Anniversary patches such as this were produced to celebrate important milestones in squadron history and were typically issued in limited numbers to serving personnel and participants. They are now highly sought after by collectors of Belgian Air Force, NATO and Cold War military aviation memorabilia.

This 1 Squadron 70th Anniversary patch is an excellent example of Belgian military aviation heritage, combining the squadron’s First World War traditions with its modern Cold War Mirage 5 operations.

This patch dates from 1986

Originally formed in 1916, 1 Squadron became one of Belgium’s premier fighter units. During the Cold War it played an important role in NATO’s integrated air defence system, maintaining a high level of operational readiness while regularly participating in multinational exercises throughout Europe.

By 1986 the Mirage 5 had become the backbone of the Belgian Air Force’s tactical fighter force. Designed for low-level strike and reconnaissance missions, the aircraft provided Belgium with a highly capable combat aircraft able to support NATO operations across Western Europe during the final decade of the Cold War.

Anniversary patches such as this were produced to celebrate important milestones in squadron history and were typically issued in limited numbers to serving personnel and participants.
