History
41 Air Rescue Squadron ARS was activated on 14 November 1952 at Hamilton AFB California assigned to 4 Air Rescue Group equipped with SB 17G Flying Fortress Dumbo air sea rescue airborne lifeboats C 82 Packet fixed wing aircraft adapted for search and rescue and H 5 Dragonfly helicopters to provide air sea rescue cover for the South West. The Squadron upgraded to SA 16 Albatross amphibious flying boats and SH 19 Chickasaw helicopters in 1953. The Squadron was reassigned to Air Rescue and Recovery Service on 8 December 1956 and was inactivated on 18 March 1960.
41 Air Rescue Squadron ARS was reactivated on 29 December 1961 at Hamilton AFB assigned to Military Air Transport Service MATS equipped with HU 16 Albatross amphibious flying boats and SH HH 19 Chickasaw helicopters. The Squadron was reassigned to Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Service and added high altitude atmospheric sampling device recovery to its tasking in 1962. 41 ARS deployed aircraft and aircrews to Air Force bases in Florida bases during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962. The Squadron received HH 43 Huskie helicopters in 1963 but lost its helicopters the same year operating solely with HU 16 Albatross amphibious flying boats.
The Squadron was redesignated 41 Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron on 8 January 1966 and reequipped with HC 130 Combat King Hercules air sea rescue airdrop and command aircraft. 41 ARRS was reassigned to 39 Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Wing in 1970 and added CH HH 53 Super Jolly Green Giant Buffs helicopters to its fleet. The Squadron relocated to McClellan AFB California on 1 August 1973 and replaced its CH HH 53 Buffs with CH HH 3 Jolly Green Giant helicopters. 41 ARRS was reassigned to 41 Rescue and Weather Reconnaissance Wing on 1 September 1975. CH HH 53 Super Jolly Green Giant Buff helicopters replaced the CH HH 3 Jolly Green Giants in 1976. The high altitude atmospheric sampling device recovery tasking ended when the Squadron was inactivated on 30 September 1987.
41 Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron was reactivated on 1 March 1989 at Patrick AFB Florida equipped with CH HH 3 Jolly Green Giant helicopters assigned to 41 Rescue and Weather Reconnaissance Wing but attached to Eastern Space and Missile Center for operational control to provide SAR and prelaunch security and safety surveillance of NASA launches and recovery or medical evacuation for Space Shuttle crewmembers. The Squadron was redesignated 41 Air Rescue Squadron on 1 June 1989 and reassigned to Air Rescue Service on 1 August 1989.
41 ARS was redesignated 41 Rescue Squadron RQS and was reassigned to 1 Operations Group on 1 February 1993. The Squadron retained its commitment to NASA operations and in addition was tasked with day and night operations with night vision goggles NVGs low level combat rescue air refueling and survivor rescue. 41 RQS upgraded to HH 60G Pave Hawk helicopters in 1994 and was reassigned to 1 Rescue Group on 14 June 1995. The Squadron deployed personnel and aircraft to Southwest Asia to provide combat search and rescue CSAR to cover operations over Iraq in 1996 and 1997. 41 RQS relocated to Moody AFB Georgia reassigned to 347 Operations Group 347 Rescue Wing on 1 April 1997. The Squadron provided CSAR for air operations over Serbia in 1999 and deployed in support of combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq in 2002 and 2003. The Squadron deployed assets to serve on the 83 Expeditionary Rescue Squadron ERQS in Afghanistan in 2014 and deployed to Afghanistan as 41 Expeditionary Rescue Squadron ERQS in 2015.
This patch dates from the 1970s
