History 1949 – 2013

Royal Naval Flying Training Flight was set up in 1949 by the Britannia Royal Naval College Dartmouth to provide summer flying camps and recreational flying with Tiger Moths. Later on Auster De Havilland Chipmunk Miles Messenger and Miles Gemini aircraft were also received by the Flight for flying training. Grading of potential aircrew was introduced and the Flight carried out assessments of future aircrew during the week and covered the recreational and cadet use at weekends. The Flight based itself at Roborough Airport Plymouth and by 1966 the flight had stabilized at 12 Chipmunk aircraft but still carried the reference to the tiger moths with the name Training Tigers.

On 6 December 2001 the Royal Naval Flying Training Flight was recommissioned as 727 Naval Air Squadron at Plymouth City Airport, initially with the De Havilland Chipmunk and later with the Grob Tutor and in January 2007 the squadron relocated to RNAS Yeovilton
