Squadron History
The Squadron based at Seletar at the beginning of WWII with Vildebeest aircraft which in 1942 were used in strikes against Japanese shipping loosing most of their aircraft to the advancing Japanese before being overrun and captured with a few escaping to Australia.
100 Squadron was reformed on 15 December 1942 at RAF Grimsby receiving Lancasters in January 1943 for night time heavy bombing raids on France and Germany. For the last month of the war the Squadron moved to RAF Elsham Wolds and was involved in the humanitarian Operation Manna food drops over Holland and Operation Exodus the repatriation of POWs from Belgium Germany and Italy.
The Squadron relocated to RAF Hemswell in 1946 equipped with Lancasters and later Lincolns. 100 Squadron moved to Malaya in 1950 taking part in Operations Firedog and Musgrave and then deployed to RAF Eastleigh Kenya in January 1954 in response to the Mau Mau Uprising. Returning to RAF Wittering in March 1954 the Squadron reequipped with Canberra bombers and disbanded on 1 September 1959.
100 Squadron reformed at RAF Wittering on 1 May 1962 equipped with Victor B 2 bombers which in early 1964 began carrying Blue Steel missile nuclear weapons before disbanding on 30 September 1968. The squadron reformed at RAF West Raynham,in 1972 equipped with Canberra aircraft to provide target facilities. The Squadron combined with 85 and 98 Squadrons and operated 26 Canberra aircraft from RAF Marham and moved to RAF Wyton in 1982.
The Squadron converted to Hawk T 1 aircraft in 1991 for target facilities training exercise and front line support and dedicated aircraft for the Joint Forward Air Controllers Training and Standards Unit and in 1994 moved to RAF Finningley. In August 1995 100 Squadron lost its RAF ground crew when aircraft maintenance and ground handling was transferred to civilian contractors. The Squadron relocated to RAF Leeming in 1995 on the closure of RAF Finningley.
