65 Squadron converted from Mustangs to Spitfire LF XVIe in 1945 and de Havilland Hornet fighters in June 1946. The Squadron reequipped with Meteors In December 1950 and in August 1951 it relocated to RAF Duxford. Hunter aircraft were received In December 1956 and 65 Squadron disbanded on 31 march 1961.
The squadron reactivated on 1 January 1964 at RAF Seletar Singapore equipped with Bloodhound surface to air missiles providing anti aircraft cover. The Squadron disbanded on 30 March 1970.
The Squadron reformed on 31 December 1986 at RAF Coningsby as 65 Reserve Squadron the shadow designation for 229 OCU Operational Conversion Unit for Tornado F 2 and F 3 aircraft. 229 OCU and 65 Reserve Squadron was disbanded on 1 July 1992 on redesignation as 56 Reserve Squadron.
