63 Squadron was reactivated on 1 September 1946 equipped with Spitfire LF 16e fighters on the renumbering of 164 Squadron. The squadron was reequipped with Meteor jet fighters in April 1948 and relocated to RAF Waterbeach in May 1950. 63 Squadron converted to Hunter fighters in October 1956 before disbanding on 31 October 1958.

63 Squadron reformed as the Shadow unit for the Day Fighter Combat Squadron of Central Fighter Establishment on 30 November 1958 equipped with Hunter fighters. The Day Fighter Combat Squadron would be known as its Shadow unit designation 63 Squadron for front line capability in the event of war.

The Squadron disbanded on 1 June 1963 with the Shadow designation transferred to one of 229 OCU Operational Conversion Unit Squadrons equipped with Hunter aircraft based at RAF Chivenor. 229 OCU was redesignated as Tactical Weapons Unit on 2 September 1970 and 63 squadron remained one of its Shadow units. 63 squadron was transferred to 2 TWU on 1 August 1980 and reequipped with Hawk jet trainers. When 2 TWU was redesignated 7 FTS on 1 April 1992 63 Squadron was retained as a component. 63 Squadron disbanded on 23 September 1992 and its role was transferred to 19 Reserve Squadron.
