USAFE Command History USAF Twelfth Air Force Patch

Twelfth Air Force reactivated on 21 January 1951 at Wiesbaden AB West Germany assigned to United States Air Forces in Europe and was the first USAFE unit to be committed to NATO under Allied Air Forces Central Europe AFCENT becoming the US element of 4 Allied Tactical Air Forces 4 ATAF along with 1 French Tactical Air Corps and 1 Royal Canadian Air Force Air Division on 2 April 1952 charged with conducting the AFCENT
aerial mission with 12 Air Force establishing a further HQ at 4 ATAF at Landsberg AB.

12 Air Forces two Headquarters were reunited through its move to Ramstein AB on 27 April 1953 with 4 ATAF HQ moving to Trier. Twelfth
Air Force was consolidated with Headquarters USAFE on 10 Nov 1957 with 12 AF at Ramstein AB became USAFE Advanced Headquarters ADVON which included command staff functions communications and combat intelligence. At the same time CINCUSAFE became Commander 4 ATAF moving from Trier to Ramstein. HQ 12th AF returned to the US on 1 Jan 1958 relocating to Connally AFB Texas assigned to Tactical Air Command to focus on training tactical air crews to a state of combat readiness capable of conducting joint air operations.
