Squadron History
523 TFS Tactical Fighter Squadron the Crusaders primary mission was to maintain a continuous ability to rapidly deploy providing air support worldwide offensive and defensive day or night combat operations including air interdiction, close air support, forward air control, strategic attack and counter-air with a wide variety of conventional, precision-guided and nuclear weapons.
In 1957 523 Fighter Bomber Squadron was reassigned to Tactical Air Command and re-equipped with F-101B Voodoos Cannon AFB and re-designated 523 Tactical Fighter Squadron in 1958 receiving F 100 Super Sabres in 1959. The Squadron provided rotational deployments to Sixteenth Air Force in southern Europe including Turkey TUSLOG, France, Saudi Arabia and other stations as part of United States Air Forces in theater.
In 1964 rotational deployments to Japan and South Korea commenced and reassignment to PACAF and Clark Air Base, Philippines in 1965 to provide rotational deployments to Taiwan in 1966 later provided it F 4 Phantom IIs received in 1967 to Thirteenth Air Force in Thailand for operations over Vietnam. The Squadron returned to Cannon in 31 August 1973 and re-equipped with F 111Ds to continue its tactical rapid deployment role. In November 1991 the Squadron was re-designated 523 Fighter Squadron and whilst the Squadron did not take part in Desert Shield and Desert Storm it deployed to Incirlik Turkey for Operation Provide Comfort 1992-1993.
523 FS received F 16s in 1995 and deployed to Prince Sultan AB Saudi Arabia for Operation Southern Watch March 1998-March 1999 then to Aviano AB Italy for Operation Allied Force March–June 1999 and during August and September 1999 the Squadron detached to NAS Keflavik Iceland for Coronet Norsemen. Deployments followed to undisclosed locations in Southwest Asia 2002-2007 as well as Misawa Japan and
Operation Southern Watch during 2005. The Squadron was inactivated in 2007 when Cannon was reassigned as Special Operations base.
