Squadron History

With the War in Korea and the threat of a Soviet invasion in West Germany US Air Force Security Service USAFSS quickly expanded its signal intelligence capabilities in Europe and the Far East and on 23 May 1951 activated its first operational group the 6910 Security Group at Brooks AFB Texas and relocated it to Wiesbaden Germany. With Wiesbaden headquarters of USAFE space for additional military units was restricted and 6910 SG split with headquarters remaining in Wiesbaden managing the intelligence production cycle and operations based at Cambri Fritsch Kaserne Darmstadt with analysts carrying out electronic traffic exploration.

6910 Security Group controlled 2 Radio Squadron Mobile at Darmstadt with Det 21 Rothwesten Det 22 Schleissheim Det 24 Berlin and Det 25 Landsberg 41 RSM Bremerhaven 12 RSM Landsberg Det 121 Linz Austria Det 122 Schleissheim 10 RSM RAF Chicksands England 34 RSM Wheelus AB Libya and Project Penn Ankara Turkey. 6910 Security Groups Headquarters and Operations came back together in early 1953 when it relocated to Landsberg AB Germany where USAFSS formed 6900 Security Group with a cadre from 6910 SG.

The Groups Squadrons and Detachments were subject to regular changes in location and unit designations loosing 10 and 34 RSM and gaining 85 RSM in 1954 and in 1955 41 RSM was redesignated 6913 RSM with 12 RSM becoming 6912 RSM and 85 RSM becoming 6914 RSM.

6910 Security Group was redesignated 6910 Radio Group Mobile RGM and Det 1 6914 Radio Squadron Mobile at Tempelhof Central Airport Berlin was redesignated Det 1 6910 Radio Group Mobile on 1 September 1956. On 1 July 1959 Det 1 6910 RGMs personnel equipment and mission at Tempelhof was taken over by 6912 Radio Squadron Mobile.

6910 Radio Group Mobile was redesignated 6910 Security Wing on 1 July 1962 relocated to Augsburg and on 1 February 1970 was renamed 6910 Security Group. 6910 Security Group was deactivated on 30 June 1974 at Augsburg Germany.

6910 Electronic Security Wing was reactivated at Lindsey AS Germany on 1 July 1981 under ESC Electronic Security Command which was established on on 1 August 1979 on the renaming of US Air Force Security Service USAFSS and deactivated on 15 July 1988 on its redesignation to 691 Electronic Security Wing.

This patch dates from the 1950s.
