Squadron History

419 All Weather Fighter Squadron Moose activated on 15 March 1954 at RCAF Station North Bay with CF 100 Canuck aircraft tasked with air defence for North American Air Defence Command under RCAF Air Defence Command. In 1956 the Air Force decided to replace one Sabre squadron in each of 1 Air Divisions Europes four fighter wings with an all weather fighter squadron in support of NATO. The Squadron replaced 414 Fighter Squadron in 4 Fighter Wing at RCAF Station Baden Soellingen West Germany in August 1957 as part of 1 Air Division Europe. The
Squadron was disbanded at RCAF Station Baden Soellingen on 31 December 1962 on the withdrawal of CF 100 Canuck aircraft from operational service.  

The Squadron reformed as 419 Tactical Fighter Training Squadron on 2 May 1975 at CFB Cold Lake with CF 5 Freedom Fighter jets to provide operational training for the Freedom Fighter. With advanced pilot training becoming a post wings course 1 Canadian Forces Flying Training School 1 CFFTS was renamed 419 Tactical Fighter Training Squadron on 10 September 1977. With the withdrawal of CF 5 Freedom Fighter operations and the introduction of the CF 18 Hornet 419 TFTS role changed to that of lead in fighter training and adversary training for the CF 18 Hornet in 1983. The Squadron disbanded on 24 June 1995 Iwith the retirement of the last CF 5 Freedom Fighter aircraft were retired.

The squadron reactivated as 419 Tactical Fighter Training Squadron on 23 July 2000 at 4 Wing Cold Lake equipped with CT 155 Hawk to conduct Phase IV of the NATO Flying Training in Canada NFTC program initially for pilots from Canada Denmark Italy Singapore and the Royal Air Force with Sweden Switzerland Finland France Hungary and the Royal Navy joining the program.
