Squadron History

9 Fighter Bomber Squadron was renamed 9 Tactical Fighter Squadron TFS on 8 July 1958 at Etain Rouvres Air Base France with F 100 Super
Sabres under 49 Tactical Fighter Wing. The Squadron moved to Spangdahlem Air Base West Germany in 1959 and received F 105 Thunderchiefs in 1962. 9 TFS transitioned to F 4 Phantom II fighters in 1967 and relocated to Holloman Air Force Base New Mexico in 1968 as part of the NATO committed dual based Wing concept.

Under the dual basing concept the Squadron undertook regular deployments to Europe and Asia Bitburg AB West Germany 12 September to 11 October 1970 attached to 36 Tactical Fighter Wing Hahn AB West Germany 9 September to 7 October 1971 attached to 50 Tactical Fighter Wing Takhli RTAFB Thailand 13 May to 5 October 1972 Bitburg AB 4 February to 15 March 1973 attached to 36 Tactical Fighter Wing Bitburg AB 6 September to 7 October 1975 Hahn AB attached to 36 Tactical Fighter Wing 22 September to 21 October 1976 attached to 50 Tactical Fighter Wing and Ramstein AB West Germany 10 September to 10 October 1977 attached to 86 Tactical Fighter Wing.

9 TFS reequipped with F 15 Eagle at the end of 1977 ceasing its dual basing commitment and retasking to air superiority. The Squadron
continued its deployments to Europe with Aalborg Air Base Denmark 12 August to 8 September 1981 and 11 August to 10 September 1984 Soesterberg Air Base Netherlands 20 May to 20 June 1986 and Wittmundhaven Air Base West Germany 16 May to 13 June 1989. The Squadron was redesignated 9 Fighter Squadron on 1 October 1991.
