Squadron History

5 Fighter Squadron reactivated at Schweinfurt Airfield Germany on 9 Nov 1946 under 52 Fighter Wing as a United States Air Forces in Europe USAFE fighter squadron tasked with occupation duties. The Squadron relocated to and Bad Kissingen Airfield Germany in early 1957 and in June 1947 was reassigned from USAFE to Air Defense Command moved to Mitchell Field New York and equipped with F-61 Black Widows for air defense of the eastern United States. On 10 May 1948 the Squadron was renamed 5 Fighter Squadron All Weather and in June 1948 the unit reequipped
with F-82 Twin Mustangs. In autumn 1949 5 FS AW moved to McGuire AFB New Jersey and was renamed 5 Fighter-All Weather Squadron on 20 Jan 1950.

The Squadron was re-designated 5 Fighter-Interceptor Squadron FIS on 1 May 1951 remaining under the renamed 52 Fighter Interceptor Wing until 1952 when assigned to 4709 Air Defense Wing then 568th Air Defense Group in 1953 and 4709th Air Defense Wing in 1954. In August 1955 5 FIS relocated to Suffolk County AFB New York under 52 Fighter Group and in the spring of 1957 the unit reequipped with F-102A Delta Daggers.

In February 1960 5 FIS moved to Minot AFB North Dakota assigned to 32 Fighter Wing and received F-106 Delta Darts. The Squadron was reassigned to Minot Air Defense Sector in 1962 Great Falls Air Defense Sector in 1963 28th Air Division in 1966 24th Air Division in 1969 and 25th Air Division in 1983

5 FIS received F-15 Eagles in 1984 with the last F-106s departing in 1985 and was reassigned to Northwest Air Defense Sector in 1987. The Squadron was inactivated on 1 July 1988.

The Squadron was reactivated on 16 February 1990 at Vance AFB as 5 Flying Training Squadron equipped with T-37 Tweets and T-38 Talons as an Air Training Command Undergraduate Pilot Training squadron under 71 Flying Training Wing and was stood down on 15 December 1991. 5 Flying Training Squadron was again reactivated on 1 April 1998 at Vance AFB under 71 Flying Training Wing training pilots and pilot instructors using T-37 Tweets T-37 Talons and T-1 Jayhawks. The T-37 Tweets were relinquished in 2006.
