Royal Saudi Air Force Technical Studies Institute was activated at King Abdul Aziz Air Base Dhahran in 1968 to train Saudi aircraft technicians for the RSAF on all aspects of the equipment delivered under the Magic Carpet programme with the UK including Lightning Hunter and Strikemaster aircraft and associated weapons loads avionics airframes and engines. Aircraft technician cadets were trained by British instructors under contract to British Aircraft Corporation later British Aerospace. The courses commenced with intensive English language training as the rest of the course is undertaken in English as much of the equipment is from the UK and later the US.

Courses have been updated as new aircraft and equipment has been acquired including F 5 F 15 Tornado and Typhoon fighter bombers Hawk and Pilatus trainers and C 130 Transport aircraft with some cadets receiving training in the UK and the US. Graduates take up technical posts to support operations at all RSAF bases.
