History 1945 2015
15 British Parachute Battalion was formed in 1945 from the Chindits 1 Battalion the Kings Regiment in India under 77 Indian Parachute Brigade part of the 44 Indian Airborne Division. The war ended before the battalion was committed to combat but a number of officers and sergeants parachuted into Japanese Prisoner of War Camps in Java Sumatra Bangkok and Singapore to provide aid to the prisoners.
Following the Japanese surrender the 44 Indian Airborne Division was reorganized and renamed 2 Indian Airborne Division in November 1945 with all British troops being withdrawn from the Division including 15 Parachute Battalion in preparation for the independence of India. The British troops were formed into 6 British Independent Parachute Brigade and remained under 2 Indian Airborne Divisional command. 15 Parachute Battalion and 6 British Independent Parachute Brigade were disbanded in 1947 when India gained independence.
The unit reformed in the UK as the 15 Scottish Parachute Battalion TA on 1 March 1947 based at various TA Drill Halls in Scotland with HQ and A Company at Glasgow B Company at Edinburgh and C Company at Aberdeen. In 1948 the Battalion was renamed 15 Scottish Battalion The Parachute Regiment TA.
The Battalion was redesignated 15 Scottish Volunteer Battalion The Parachute Regiment and came under command of 44 Parachute Brigade Volunteers on 1 April 1967 as a TAVR category II unit with a NATO role in support of the British Army of the Rhine BAOR. On 1 April 1978 16 Volunteer Independent Parachute Company The Parachute Regiment was assigned to 15 Scottish Volunteer Battalion The Parachute Regiment and was redesignated 16 Lincoln Company 15 Scottish Volunteer Battalion The Parachute Regiment at Lincoln with a detachment at Loughborough. The detachment at Loughborough moved to Leicester in 1981. D Fire Support Company was formed at Troon in 1984. 16 Lincoln Company was transferred from 15 Scottish Volunteer Battalion to 4 Volunteer Battalion The Parachute Regiment on 11 July 1984.
In 1989 the Battalion formed part of the Parachute Regiment Group PRG providing a NATO reinforcement role for 1 UK Armoured Division BAOR Germany. The Battalion was absorbed by 4 Volunteer Battalion The Parachute Regiment and reduced on 6 April 1993 retaining a representative rifle company designated 15 Scottish Company 4 Volunteer Battalion The Parachute Regiment at Glasgow with Platoons at Edinburgh and Aberdeen and a detachment at Glenrothes. The Aberdeen platoon and the Glenrothes detachment disbanded on 1 May 1999. 10 Battalion Volunteers The Parachute regiment was reduced and absorbed into 4 Volunteer Battalion in June 1999 as B Company and 15 Scottish Company was redesignated A Company Scotland 4 Volunteer Battalion The Parachute Regiment.
