Unit History 1945 2015

Following XI Fighter Squadrons service in Burma with Hurricanes for ground attack the Squadron formed part of the occupation forces in Japan from August 1945 until it disbanded in February 1948. 11 F Squadron reformed in Germany in October 1949 equipped with Mosquito fighters progressing to Vampires and Venoms before disbanding in 1957. The Squadron reformed in January 1959 equipped with Meteor night fighters replacing them with Javelins in 1962 before disbanding in 1966.

11 XI F Fighter Squadron reformed at RAF Binbrook in early 1967 with Lightning fighter aircraft for UK air defence operating QRA against Soviet intrusions. The Squadron disbanded in May 1988.

11 F Squadron reactivated at RAF Leeming in August 1988 equipped with the twin seat Panavia Tornado F3. The Squadron deployed to Saudi Arabia and undertook combat operation during Op Granby and Desert Storm in 1990 and 1991 and regularly deployed to the Gulf for operations during the 1990s including Southern Watch. Some of No XI Squadrons Tornado F3s were modified to carry the ALARM missile as EF3s to widen their capabilities to include suppression of enemy air defense SEAD in 2003. No XI F squadron disbanded in October 2005.

The Squadron reformed at RAF Coningsby on 29 March 2007 as 11 Squadron dropping the Fighter F designation in recognition of its new tasking as the RAFs lead Typhoon multi role squadron. In March 2011 XI Squadron deployed to Gioia Del Colle with assets from 29R and 3F Squadrons to police the no fly zone over Libya.
