Squadron History

The wartime 100 Bombardment Squadron was reactivated and redesignated as the 106 Bombardment Squadron Light allotted to the Alabama Air National Guard on 24 May 1946 organized at Birmingham Municipal Airport and extended federal recognition on 25 November 1946 assigned to 117 Tactical Reconnaissance Group equipped with B 26 Invader bombers. The Squadron converted to RB 26C Invader reconnaissance aircraft with cameras and flash flares for night photography in 1950 and was redesignated 106 Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron Night Photo. The Squadron relocated to Shaw AB on 5 January 1952 joining 16 and 18 TRS flying night reconnaissance training missions for recon crews to be deployed to the Korea War redesignated 106 Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron on 9 January 1952 before returning to Birmingham on 1 January 1953.

The Squadron converted to RF 84F Thunderstreak jet reconnaissance aircraft in May 1957 and as a result of the Berlin Crisis in 1961 deployed to Dreux Louvilliers AB France arriving on 3 November 1961. Following problems with French Air Traffic Control and lack of permission to take off the Squadron moved to Chaumont Semoutiers AB on 8 December 1961 returning to Birmingham on 22 July 1962 reissued with replacement F 84Fs for those left behind in France.

106 TRS took part in US exercises as well as air to air refueling training flights to Europe and in November 1971 received RF 4C Phantom II all weather day or night tactical reconnaissance aircraft and US exercises continued ranging from Jack Frost Alaska to Red Flag at Nellis AB. The Squadron deployed to Ramstein AB West Germany in March 1976 for Coronet Sprint and continued US deployments during the 1980s.  

The Squadron deployed six RF 4C Phantoms direct from Birmingham to Shaikh Isa Air Base Bahrain on 24 August 1990 as 106 Tactical Fighter Squadron Provisional following the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq to conduct pre ground war surveillance and photo reconnaissance mapping of Iraqi forces in occupied Kuwait along the Saudi Arabia Iraq border before being relieved on 18 December 1990. After the end of Desert Storm the phase out of the RF 4C with the ANG was accelerated and the Squadron was redesignated 106 Reconnaissance Squadron on 15 Mar 1992.

During 1994 the RF 4Cs were retired and the Squadron retasked for Air Refueling with redesignation as 106 Air Refueling Squadron on 1 October 1994 and reequipping with KC 135 Stratotankers under the newly redesignated 117 Air Refueling Wing. In November 1995 the Squadron deployed to Pisa Airport Italy in support of Operation Deny Flight over Bosnia. The unit next deployed to RAF Croughton UK in 1999 in support of Operation Noble Anvil over Kosovo and then to Curacao Netherland Antilles for Operation Coronet Nighthawk a Latin American counter drug operation. The unit participated in numerous Blue Flag exercises and also took part in the Expeditionary Forces experiment 1998.

After the 911 attacks on the United States the Squadron was deployed to MacDill AFB Florida for refueling F 15 and F 16 aircraft flying Combat Air Patrol missions over major cities in the Southeastern United States as part of Operation Noble Eagle.
