VF 171 Aces was reactivated at NAS Oceana Virginia on 5 August 1977 when VF 101 Fleet Replacement Squadrons F 4 Phantom and the A 4 Skyhawk elements were split prior to its transition to F 14 Tomcats. VF 171 was established to take over the F 4 Phantom Fleet Replacement role for the Atlantic Fleet. It was also known as the F 4 Phantom Fighter Readiness Squadron.

VF 171 activated its Det Key West Detachment at NAS Key West Florida to provide Dissimilar Air Combat Training DACT with F 4 Phantom and A 4 Skyhawk aircraft.

VF 171 was inactivated on 1 June 1984.
