On 1 May 1972 Marine Training Squadron VMT 203 was redesignated Marine Attack Training Squadron VMAT 203 tasked with light attack jet training with initially with its A 4 Skyhawks and on 29 September 1974 received AV 8A and two seater TAV 8A Harrier aircraft.

In December 1983 the first AV 8B Harrier II was delivered and until March 1985 VMAT 203 was assigned the dual missions of training both AV 8 A C pilot and AV 8 B replacement aircrews.
