Marine Attack Squadron VMA 224 was redesignated Marine All Weather Attack Squadron VMA AW 224 on 1 November 1966 and relinquished their A4 Skyhawk aircraft and reequipped with A 6 Intruder aircaft. In 1971 the Bengals deployed to the South China Sea aboard the USS Coral Sea CV 43 as part of Carrier Air Wing 15 and completed six line periods on Yankee Station participating in numerous operations including the historic Operation Pocket Money mining of Hai Phong Harbor. During the 1970s the Squadron made numerous deployments to Europe and the Pacific where they participated in joint and combined exercises.
