History

Following 39 ARRS redesignation to 39 SOW Special Operations Wing on 1 March 1988 its 67 Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron which operated HC 130 Combat King Hercules aircraft and HH 53 Super Jolly Green Giant helicopters was split at RAF Woodbridge on 1 June 1988 to form 67 SOS Special Operations Squadron became the fixed wing element to operate the HC 130 and 21 SOS as the new vertical lift rotary wing element to operate the HH 53 helicopters immediately reequipping with MH 53J Pave Low III.

667 CAMS Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron was also activated at RAF Woodbridge on 1 June 1988 to undertake all organizational and intermediate level maintenance for the 67 SOS HC 130 aircraft and the 21 SOS HH 53 and MH 53 helicopters. 667 CAMS was redesignated 667 SOMS Special Operations Maintenance Squadron deploying elements with the flying Squadrons to forward operating locations including to Shannon Airport Ireland on 14 January 1989 in the two day 21 SOS long range rescue of the survivors of the Yarrawonga freighter floundering over 300 mile out in the Atlantic refueled by 67 SOS HC 130s with support from 56 ARRS and Det 4 1730 Pararescue Squadron.

667 SOMS deployed elements to support 7 SOS 21 SOS and 67 SOS with Joint Special Operations Task Force at Batman Air Base Turkey from 13 January to 18 March 1991 for Operation Desert Storm with support provided for Exercise Teamwork 92 at Evenes RNoAS Norway 5 to 22 March 1992 followed by deployment to Incirlik AB and Diyarbakır AB Turkey from 6 April to 10 June 1991 for Joint Task Force Provide Comfort working with US Amy Special Forces and International Coalition partners. While Operation Provide Comfort was underway the Squadron sent other elements with 39 SOW 39 SOCS 7 SOS and 67 SOS for Operation Silver Anvil the non combatant evacuation from Sierra Leone during April and May 1992.

667 SOMS elements were again deployed to Turkey for Operation Provide Comfort II later in 1991 and joining 21 SOS 67 SOS 321 STS deployed to Aviano AB Italy in June 1992 for Operation Provide Promise humanitarian relief operation into Sarajevo Bosnia and Herzegovina during which time element deployed to Sigonella NAS Italy for Exercise Ellipse Bravo returned to Aviano in September 1992 for Operation Provide Promise II.

Following the relocation of 7 SOS from Rhein Main to RAF Alconbury in November 1992 667 SOMS provided maintenance to its newly received MC 130H Combat Talon II aircraft.

With the activation of 352 Special Operations Group SOG at RAF Alconbury in December 1992 to replace the inactivating 39 SOW with 667 SOMS inactivated and replaced by newly activated 352 SOMS Special Operations Maintenance Squadron on 1 October 1992.
