History 

748 Aircraft Maintenance Squadron AMXS was activated on 10 November 2009 at RAF Lakenheath to command the combined 493 Aircraft Maintenance Unit responsible for F 16C fighter maintenance and 56 Aircraft Maintenance Unit dealing with HH 60G Pave Hawk CSAR rescue helicopter maintenances reassigned from 48 Aircraft Maintenance Squadron AMXS producing one of USAFES most diverse Squadrons providing maintenance to fixed wing and rotary wing weapons systems.  

The Squadron has deployed assets from 493 Aircraft Maintenance Unit AMU in support of 48 Fighter Wings F 15C Squadrons and undertook NATO operations in Lithuania Romania and Iceland simultaneously and to South West Asia in support of operations in Afghanistan. 

56 Helicopter Maintenance Unit HMU continues its support to 56 Rescue Squadrons operations and deployed again with 56 RQS to Bagram AB Afghanistan as 56 Expeditionary Helicopter Maintenance Unit EHMU from January to April 2011 and on return were immediately recalled to deploy on a six month detachment on board USS Ponce LPD 15 and the Royal Navys HMS Ocean with 845 NAS Commando Squadron to support Operation Odyssey Dawn and Unified Protector off the Libyan coast. 56 HMU deployed assets with 56 RQS to RNAS Yeovilton and RFA Argus for joint exercises with the 845 Naval Air Squadron in May 2012 and deployed to Bagram AB Afghanistan to support 56 RQS CSAR from May to September 2013.  

56 RQS lost four crewmembers of Jolly 22 HH 60G Pave Hawk which crashed during low level training on the Norfolk coast on 7 January 2014. The Squadron retired the Jolly 22 call sign in honour of the airmen.
