History
4412 Rescue Squadron Provisional was activated in January 1993 at Al Mubarak AB Kuwait City International Airport Kuwait initially with HH 60 and MH 60 aircraft and personnel from Nellis based 66 Rescue Squadron to provide Combat Search And Rescue CSAR to support USAF and Coalition combat air patrolling and bombing missions for Operation Southern Watch to enforce the southern no fly zone over Iraq to prevent air attacks on the local Shi ite population and to counter Iraqi AAA defences engaging Coalition aircraft. The Squadron was manned by personnel on rotational TDY deployments from USAF rescue Squadrons worldwide. The Squadron deployed flights to forward operating locations including Camp Doha Kuwait.
Operation Southern Watch became the first USAF operational test for its Air Expeditionary Force AEF concept in October 1995 when a USAF composite unit replaced a USN Carrier Air Wing on completion of its deployment. The USAFs AEF 1 deployed with eighteen F 16 aircraft to Shaikh Isa AB Bahrain on 28 October 1995 fully armed and began combat operations within twelve hours of arriving. The AEF concept was effective and superseded Provisional units for deployments abroad with 4412 Rescue Squadron Provisional replaced in October 1998.
This patch dates from 1995.
