939 ARRG Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Group was activated in the Reserves at Portland International Airport on 1 April 1985 to command and support 304 ARRS Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron equipped with HC 130 Hercules aircraft with helicopter air refueling capability and HH 1 Twin Huey helicopters which had relocated from March AFB. HH 3E Jolly Green Giant helicopters and additional HC 130 Combat King aircraft were received when 301 and 305 ARRS joined the group on 1 October 1987. 939 ARRG was upgraded to Wing status and redesignated 939 Air Rescue Wing on 1 April 1990 with 301 304 and 305 ARRS redesignated as Air Rescue Squadrons. 304 ARS upgraded its helicopters to UH 60 MH 60 Blackhawk in 1991 at the same time as 301 ARS transitioned to HH 60 Pave Hawk rescue helicopters.

939 Air Rescue Wing was redesignated 939 Rescue Wing on 1 February 1992 with 301 304 and 305 ARS redesignated as Rescue Squadrons. 304 RQS transitioned to HH 60 Pave Hawk helicopters in 1992 and 305 RQS was inactivated on 1 September 1992. 305 RQS was reactivated 1 October 1993 equipped with HH 60 Pave Hawk rescue helicopters. 301 and 304 RQS retired their HC 130 Hercules aircraft in 1997

939 Rescue Wing was retasked for air refueling and redesignated 939 Air Refueling Wing on 1 April 2003 to command and support 939 Operations Group operating and maintaining eight KC 135R Stratotanker aircraft. 939 AREFW was inactivated on 30 June 2008.
