54 Air Rescue Squadron was activated on 14 Novenber 1952 at Goose Bay AB Canada assigned to 6 Air Rescue Group equipped with SA 16 Albatross amphibious flying boats SB 17 Dumbo Airborne Rescue Boat SC 47 Skytrain aircraft adapted for SAR and H 5 helicopters to provide search rescue and recovery services for USAF operations in the waters between Labrador Canada Greenland and New England. The Squadrons SB 17 Dumbos were retired in 1953 and the H 5 helicopters in 1954. 54 ARS lost its SC 47s and added H 19 Chickasaw helicopters in 1955 and exchanged them for SH 21B Work Horse helicopters in 1956. The SA 16 Albatross aircraft were retired and SC 54 Skymaster aircraft adapted for SAR were received in 1957. The Squadron was reassigned to Air Rescue Service on 18 February 1958. 54 ARS equipped with its SC 54 fixed wing aircraft and SH 19B helicopters was inactivated on 18 June 1960.
54 Air Rescue Squadron was reactivated at Goose Bay AB Canada on 18 June 1961 assigned to Air Rescue Service equipped with SA HU 16 Albatross amphibious flying boats and SC 54 Skymaster fixed wing rescue aircraft HH 19 Chickasaw HH 43 Huskie and SH 21B Work Horse helicopters to provide search rescue and recovery services for USAF operations in the waters between Labrador Canada Greenland and New England. The Squadron retired its SH 21B Work Horse helicopters in 1962 and its SA HU 16 Albatross aircraft and HH 19 Chickasaw helicopters in 1963 to continue with the SC 54 Skymaster fixed wing aircraft and HH 43 Huskie helicopters.
The Squadron was redesignated 54 Air Recovery Squadron on 1 July 1965 and then 54 Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron on 8 January 1966. The Squadron replaced its SC 54 Skymaster aircraft with HC 130 Combat King Hercules rescue aircraft in 1966 and relocated to Pease AFB New Hampshire on 1 August 1967 giving up its HH 43 Huskie helicopters.
54 ARRS was reassigned to 39 Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Wing on 1 January 1970 and added HH 3 Jolly Green Giant helicopters to its fleet in 1972 before retiring them in 1973 leaving the Squadron operating the HC 130 Combat King aircraft until inactivation on 1 July 1974.
The Squadron was reduced to Flight status and reactivated as 54 Rescue Flight on 1 May 1993 at Minot AFB North Dakota assigned to 91 Operations Group equipped with UH 1 Iroquois and HH 1 Huey rescue helicopters to provide security support for 91 Missile Wings missile complex transporting security forces and equipment throughout the missile fields supporting medical evacuations and Search and Rescue SAR. The Squadron was reassigned to 91 Missile Group on 1 July 1994 returning to 91 Operations Group on 1 July 1994 and added UH 1N Twin Huey helicopters to its fleet in 1996.
54 Rescue Flight was redesignated 54 Helicopter Flight on 1 May 1998. The Flight was upgraded to Squadron status and redesignated 54 Helicopter Squadron on 21 October 2005. The Squadron was attached to Twentieth Air Force Helicopter Operations Group in August 2014 and then reassigned to 582 Helicopter Group on 5 January 2015.
