History  

Pacific Air Rescue Centre was activated at Hickam AFB Hawaii on 2 August 1961 under Air Rescue Service to coordinate rescue and recovery resources and conduct missions in western pacific and Southeast Asia. PARC established HH 43 Huskie Local Base Rescue LBR and Aircrew Rescue ACR detachments at air bases in the Pacific and with more activated with the onset of combat operations over Vietnam. Det 1 at Fuchu Japan Det 3 at Tan Son Nhut AB South Vietnam Det 4 at Bien Hao AB South Vietnam Det 5 at Suwon AB Korea Det 7 at Misawa AB Japan Det 11 at Kusan AB Korea and Det 12 at Anderson AB Guam.

PARC was redesignated Pacific Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Center PARRC on 8 January 1966 and replaced its Detachments with its newly activated 3 Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Group responsible for rescue operations in the Vietnam area with 31 ARRS HH 43 Huskie helicopter HC 130 Combat King Detachments 33 ARRS HU 16 Albatross amphibious flying boats HH 43 Huskie and HH 3 Jolly Green Giant helicopters 36 ARRS HC 130p Combat King Hercules HH43 Huskie helicopters 37 ARRS HH 3E Jolly Green Giant helicopter Detachments 38 ARRS HH 43 Huskie Detachments 39 ARRS HC 130P Combat King Hercules Detachments and 76 ARRS with HC 130P Combat King Hercules Detachments all with upgraded and additional equipment increased its combat search and rescue CSAR operations in support of the Vietnam War. In addition PARRC increased work with NASA in support of their space programs including manned space flight recovery.

PARRC was redesignated  41 Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Wing ARRW on 8 February 1969 at the same time as Atlantic Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Center was redesignated 40 Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Wing ARRW. The Wing was assigned 79 ARRS with HC 130P Combat King Hercules on 8 February 1969 and inactivated 33 ARRS on 1 October 1970 before reactivating 33 ARRS again on 1 July 1971 with HH 43 Huskie and HH 3 Jolly Green Giant helicopters. The Wing was assigned 40 ARRS with HH 3E Jolly Green Giants on 20 August 1972. 79 ARRS transferred out on 30 June 1972. 36 ARRS was transferred out on 30 November 1972. 41 ARRW continued its CSAR role in support of the Vietnam War until its conclusion with the fall of Saigon in April 1975. The Wing was assigned 71 ARRS with HC 130P Combat King Hercules on 1 July 1974 and transferred out 31 ARRS on 1 July 1975 and 76 ARRS on 1 August 1975.

The Wing relocated to McClellan AFB California and was redesignated 41 Rescue and Weather Reconnaissance Wing on 1 September 1975 when in addition to rescue and recovery it was assigned the worldwide weather atmospheric sampling and typhoon reconnaissance tasks of 9 Weather Reconnaissance Wing and the transfer of 53 54 and 55 Weather Reconnaissance Squadrons with their WC 130 and WC 135 aircraft. At the same time the Wing was assigned 41 Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron ARRS with HC 130P Combat King Hercules. 48 ARRS with UH 1N Huey helicopters joined the Wing from 1 January to 1 August 1976 and 40 ARRS was transferred out on 31 January 1976 followed by 48 ARRS on 1 August 1976. The Wing received 38 Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron with CH 3 Jolly Green Giant helicopters on 8 January 1981. 37 ARRS with UH 1N Huey helicopters was assigned on 1 February 1987.

54 WRS was inactivated on 30 September 1987. 41 RWRW was inactivated on 1 August 1989.
