34 Air Rescue Squadron was activated on 17 October 1952 at Kadena AB Okinawa equipped with SB 29 Superfortress SC C-47 Skytrain rescue aircraft and H 5 Dragonfly and H 19 Chickasaw helicopters on the redesignation of D Flight 2nd Air Rescue Squadron to provide maritime search and rescue with airdrop lifeboats and parachute trained rescue men to drop and recover downed aircrew around Okinawa. The Squadron provided rescue escort overwatch to Okinawa based B 29 bomber strike force combat missions to Korea from November 1952 to July 1953 and regularly undertook Duckbutt rescue and recovery orbits over the East China Sea to assist damaged or lost aircraft on combat missions over Korea. 34 ARS was inactivated on 8 September 1954.

The Squadron was reactivated on 3 February 2003 as 34 Weapons Squadron on the redesignation of the HH 60G Division USAF Weapons School as an instructional squadron of the USAF Weapons School at Nellis AFB equipped with HH 60 Pave Hawk for Pararescuemen PJs and HH 60 helicopter pilot rescue training.
