History  

Following receipt of upgraded U 2R aircraft 9 Strategic Reconnaissance Wing activated 4029 Strategic Reconnaissance Training Squadron on 1 August 1981 at Beale AFB to train all TR 1 and U 2 pilots. 4029 SRTS transferred its TR 1A aircraft to 17 Reconnaissance Wing newly activated at RAF Alconbury England on 1 October 1982 leaving the Squadron providing U 2R pilot training.

4029 Strategic Reconnaissance Training Squadron was inactivated on 1 July 1986 on its redesignation to 5 Strategic Reconnaissance Training Squadron to continue 5 Squadrons historic association with 9 Wing.
