Squadron History

6952 Electronic Security Squadron was activated on 1 January 1982 at RAF Alconbury assigned to 6910 Electronic Security Wing to set up and provide electronic security support and maintenance for TR 1 Dragon Lady strategic reconnaissance aircraft to be operated by 95 Reconnaissance Squadron which was activated at RAF Alconbury 1 October 1982. The first TR 1 Dragon Lady aircraft deployed to RAF Alconbury on 10 February 1983 and 6952 ESS began its direct operational support to TR 1 strategic reconnaissance intelligence missions in Europe.

With the commencement of TR 1 missions from RAF Alconbury 9 Strategic Reconnaissance Wings U 2R operations over Central Europe ceased and RAF Mildenhalls 6988 Electronic Security Squadrons U 2R electronic security maintenance personnel were transferred to 6952 ESS.The Squadron was reassigned to Electronic Security Europe on 1 January 1985 then to 693 Electronic Security Wing on 7 July 1988 and finally to 6950 Electronic Security Group on 23 May 1991. 6952 ESS was Inactivated on 30 September 1993. While inactive the Squadron was redesignated 52 Expeditionary Intelligence Squadron and was converted to provisional status on 23 July 2010.
