Squadron History 

488 Intelligence Squadron IS was activated on 1 October 1993 at RAF Mildenhall under the contemporaneously formed 67 Intelligence Wing of the Air Intelligence Agency on the redesignation of 6988 Electronic Security Squadron ESS to continue the task of the collection analysis and reporting of signals intelligence SIGINT about foreign command and control communications countermeasures weapons systems and target acquisition with mission crew on board RC 135U Combat Sent and RC 135V W Rivet Joint reconnaissance aircraft.  

Det 1 488 IS was activated at RAF Digby on 1 July 1994 on the redesignation of OL DB 450 Intelligence Squadron to provide analytic and linguistic technical expertise to the Joint Service Signals Unit JSSU the British Forces communications and electronic research and development facility. The Squadron provides a detachment at OL RS Souda Bay Crete to support deployed operations over Southern Europe Southwest Asia and North Africa. 

488 Intelligence Squadron distributes intelligence data worldwide via its Tactical Surveillance Interaction Center Mildenhall TSIC M. 

67 IW was redesignated 67 Information Operations Wing on 1 August 2000 and 488 IS was reassigned to 55 Wing at Offutt AB on 1 October 2002 to reorganise all RC 135 assets under one wing.
