Squadron History
6994 Security Squadron was activated at Tan Son Nhut AB Vietnam in April 1966 to provide specialist cryptologic technical intelligence personnel to man stations as flight crew on board modified Dakota EC 47 Electric Gooney aircraft and tasked with locating and identifying enemy forces using airborne radio direction finding ARDF techniques and collecting signals intelligence SIGINT information data immediately transmitted to the ground and used by ground and air combat commanders to direct troop movements artillery fire tactical air strikes and B 52 missions. Crew operatives flew with 360 361 and 362 Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadrons TEWS at Tan Son Nhut AB. Detachment 1 was established at Nha Trang AB in July 1966 Det 2 was established in Pleiku AB September 1966 and Det 3 was established at Nakon Phanom RTAFB Thailand in April 1969.
Detachment 1 relocated to Phu Cat AB in September 1969 Detachment 2 moved to Da Nang AB in June 1970 and Det 1 was deactivated in October 1971. 6994 Headquarters moved from Tan Son Nhut AB to Nakon Phanom RTAFB with Det 3 relocating to Ubon RTAFB in December 1972. Det 2 deactivated at Da Nang AB in February 1973 HQ relocated to Ubon RTAFB in January 1974 and Det 2 deactivated in February 1974. The last mission was flown and 6994 Security Squadron was deactivated in June 1974.
The Squadron was reactivated as 6994 Electronic Security Squadron in January 1981 at Fort Meade Maryland to provide roll on roll off Comfy Echo Comfy Ears palletised radio signal monitoring SIGINT suite workstation shelters and trained cryptologic linguistic operatives for worldwide operations within adapted C 130 Hercules aircraft. The Squadron upgraded to Comfy Levi units before receiving three Senior Scout units for EC 130E Hercules in March 1990. 6994 ESS was redesignated 94 Intelligence Squadron in 1993 with the Senior Scout systems transferred to 169 Intelligence Squadron in 1994.
