169 ESS Electronic Security Squadron Utah Air National Guard was activated on 19 September 1987 at Utah ANG Base Salt Lake City as Electronic Security Commands only ANG unit to provide a pool of highly trained linguist graduates available from the Mormon missionary Language School ELINT sensor operators and analysts to augment active duty operations. The Squadron provided Spanish speaking linguists intelligence personnel and sensor operatives for the Comfy Levi Rapidly Deployable Mobile SIGINT System RDMSS roll on roll off two shelter palletized aboard C 130 in missions over Panama. The Squadron provided Arabic linguists for Senior Warrior shelter system combat missions in USMC KC 130T aircraft during Operation Desert Storm in January to March 1991. Following budget cuts and reductions after Desert Storm the USAF transferred three Senior Scout Rapidly Deployable Mobile SIGINT System RDMSS roll on roll off COMINT ELINT shelters two from 6994 ESS at Fort Meade and one from 6933 ESS at Howard AFB Panama to the 169 ESS ANG in 1994 together with the Senior Troupe ground stations providing Tactical Information Broadcast Service TIBS. The quick change Senior Scout shelter pallets are rolled on C 130 Super E H H1 and H2 Hercules transport aircraft and all necessary linguists sensor operatives provided to collect tactical airborne command control communication countermeasures Surveillance and reconnaissance intelligence support. Squadron Arabic and Afghan interpreter intelligence personnel have been deployed rotationally for overseas combat operations over Iraq and Afghanistan every year since commencement for Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.
