The Squadron was tasked with nuclear strike and conventional air to ground strike attack roles. 512 TFS was upgraded to F 16 Fighting Falcons in 1985 and was re designated 512 Fighter Squadron on 1 May 1991 with 86 TFW becoming 86 FW and reorganized with 512 FS reassigned to the newly established 86 Operations Group.
