465 Fighter Interceptor Squadron was activated at McChord AFB Washington on 18 February 1953 equipped with F 86D Sabre Interceptor aircraft assigned to 527 Air Defense Group under Air Defense Command. 465 FIS was inactivated on 18 August 1955 when 527 ADG was inactivated on its replacement by 325 Fighter Group Air Defense.
465 FIS was activated at Griffiss AFB New York on 8 October 1955 and assigned to 4711 Air Defense Wing equipped with F 89D Scorpion aircraft. The Squadron was reassigned to 32d Air Division on 1 March 1956 and completed its upgrade to F 89H and J Scorpion aircraft by Autumn 1956. 465 Fighter Interceptor Squadron was reassigned to 4727 Air Defense Group on 8 February 1957.
465 Fighter Interceptor Squadron was reassigned to Boston Air Defense Sector relocated to Hanscom AFB Massachusetts and took over 49 Fighter Interceptor Squadrons F 86L Sabre fighters on 1 July 1959. On the same day 49 FIS relocated from Hanscom AFB to Griffis AFB taking over the 465 FIS F 89 Scorpion fighters. 465 Fighter Interceptor Squadron was the last regular duty Squadron using the F 86 Sabre and with the retirement of F 86 Sabre 465 FIS was inactivated on 15 March 1960.
465 Tactical Fighter Squadron was activated in the Reserve at Tinker AFB Oklahoma on 14 May 1972 equipped with F 105D Thunderchief aircraft assigned to the newly activated 507 Tactical Fighter Group which as 507 Fighter Group 465 Fighter Squadron operated under for its WWII service in the Pacific. Manned mainly by civilians including some commercial pilots members of the Reserve undertake the same tasks as the regular personnel to attain and remain proficient and combat ready. With the rest of the Wing transitioning from airlift and retiring C 124 Globemaster aircraft the reservists were not prepared to accept the F 105 Thunderchief aircraft even though they had arrived at Tinker AFB in April 1972 and a special team from Tactical Air Command had to inspect the aircraft and place them in temporary storage until aircrew and maintenance personnel could be trained up on the Thunderchief.
507 TFG was inactivated on 25 March 1973 and 465 TFS was assigned direct to 301 Tactical Fighter Wing. 507 TFG was reactivated again under 301 Tactical Fighter Wing on 17 October 1975 with 465 TFS reassigned. 465 TFS with 507 TFG were the first Air Force Reserve units to go to a Red Flag exercise attending in 1978 and in 1979 were the first Reserve units to deploy to Turkey for their yearly active service. 465 TFS reequipped with F 4D Phantom II aircraft in 1980 and 507 TFG was reassigned to 419 Tactical Fighter Wing on 1 October 1982.
465 TFS transitioned to F 16 A B Fighting Falcon fighter in 1988. In addition to regular training and exercises the 465 TFS and 507 TFG deployed elements for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. 465 Tactical Fighter Squadron. was redesignated 465 Fighter Squadron on 1 February 1992 with 507 TFG becoming 507 Fighter Group. 465 FS was reassigned to the newly formed 507 Operations Group on 1 August 1992.
At the end of 1993 465 Fighter Squadron and 507 Fighter Group were notified that they were to be retasked to Air Refueling and 507 FG was reassigned to 452d Air Refueling Wing on 1 April 1994 as part of the workup. 465 FS reequipped with KC 135 Stratotanker aircraft and was redesignated 465 Air Refueling Squadron on 1 October 1994 with 507 FG becoming 507 Air Refueling Group to carryout worldwide air refueling tasking. Elements of the Squadron have participated in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom and assisted with the response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
