Squadron History
318 Fighter Squadron was reactivated by Air Defence Command in May 1947 at Mitchell Field New York transferring to Hamilton Field California in December 1947 where it received its P-61 Black Widows aircraft for air defence. In early 1948 the Squadron received F-82 Twin Mustangs and was re-designated 318 Fighter Squadron All Weather on 10 May 1948. In November 1948 the Squadron moved to McChord AFB Washington where they were renamed 318 Fighter-All Weather Squadron on 20 January 1950 and reequipped with F-94As Starfire Interceptors jets in autumn 1950.
The Squadron was re-designated 318 Fighter-Interceptor Squadron on 1 May 1951 adding T-33 Shooting Stars to the fleet for adversary training and moved to Thule Air Base Greenland under Northeast Air Command in June 1953. The Squadron moved to Presque Isle AFB Maine reequipping with F-89D Scorpions and reassigned to ADC under 528 Air Defence Group in August 1954. In August 1955 the squadron returned to McChord AFB reassigned to 325 Fighter Group and transitioned to F-86D Sabres. In March 1957 the squadron reequipped with F-102A Delta Daggers and in March 1960 transitioned to F-106 Delta Darts.
318 FIS deployed to Osan AB Republic of Korea on 22 March 1968 to provide air defence following the North Korea seizure of USS Pueblo in
January 1968. 318 FIS returned to McChord AFB after the Pueblo Crisis ended leaving their aircraft in Korea with replacement F 106s provided at McChord. The Squadron converted to F-15 Eagles in 1983 and was deactivated on 7 December 1989.

With the deactivation of 325 Fighter Wing on 1 July 1968 318 FIS was assigned control of its deployed alert site at Walla Walla WA by the re-designation of Detachment 2 325 Fighter Wing to Detachment 1 318 FIS. The alert site had been established in September 1965 with 318 and 498 FISs providing deployment cover.
