Squadron History
87 Fighter Squadron was reactivated as 87 Fighter-Interceptor Squadron on 1 November 1952 at Sioux City Municipal Airport Iowa with the F-51D Mustangs to provide air defence of the central United States under 31 Air Division. The Squadron reequipped with F-86D Sabre Interceptor in 1953 and reassigned to 521 Air Defense Group in 1953. 87 FIS relocated RAF Bentwaters England in 1954 to provide additional air defense of the United Kingdom under Third Air Force and inactivated on 8 September 1955.
87 FIS reactivated on 8 April 1956 at Lockbourne AFB Ohio with F-86D Sabre Interceptors under 58 Air Division to provide air defence over the Ohio Valley. The Squadron upgraded to the F-86L Sabres in 1957 and was assigned to 30th Air Division in 1958. 87 FIS received F-102A Delta Dagger in 1958 and was assigned to the Detroit Air Defense Sector in 1959.
The Squadron re-equipped with F-101B Voodoo supersonic interceptors and the F-101F fully combat-capable operational and conversion trainers in 1960 and was assigned to 34th Air Division in 1966. The F-101Bs were transferred to the Air National Guard in 1968 and the Squadron moved to Duluth International Airport Minnesota upgrading to the F-106 Delta Darts under 343 Fighter Group.
87 FIS was reassigned to 23d Air Division in 1970 and moved to K. I. Sawyer AFB Michigan in 1971. The Squadron was assigned to 21 Air Division in 1981 and was inactivated on 1 Oct 1985 after budget cuts forced the cancellation of its scheduled conversion to the F-15 Eagle.
