Squadron History

76 Fighter Squadron was reactivated on 10 October 1946 at Northwest Field Guam with P-47 Thunderbolts to provide air defense interception operations for Guam under 23 Fighter Group. The Squadron relocated to Howard AFB Panama Canal Zone on 25 April 1949 and reequipped with RF-80 Shooting Stars and re-designated 76 Fighter Squadron Jet on 3 May 1949 before being inactivated on 24 September 1949.

The Squadron was reactivated as 76 Fighter-Interceptor Squadron on 18 August 1955 with F-89D Scorpions at Presque Isle AFB Maine under 23 Fighter Group Air defence Command The Squadron moved to Pinecastle later renamed McCoy AFB Florida and upgraded to F-89H Scorpions on 8 November 1957 and was reassigned to 35 Air Division and then to 32 Air Division on 15 November 1958. F-89J Scorpions were received in 1959. 76 FIS relocated to Westover AFB MA on 1 February 1961 reequipping with F 102 Delta Daggers and was inactivated on 1 July 1963.

The Squadron was reactivated as 76 Tactical Fighter Squadron on 1 October 1972 at England AFB, Louisiana with A-7D Corsair II for close air support operations under 23 Tactical Fighter Wing. The Squadron reequipped with A-10 Thunderbolt II in 1981 and deployed aircraft and personnel to King Fahd International Airport Saudi Arabia in August 1990 and took part in operations against Iraq in early 1991. The Squadron was re-designated 76 Fighter Squadron on 1 November 1991 and was inactivated on 29 May 1992.

The Squadron was reactivated on 1 December 1995 as 76 Space Operations Squadron SOPS at the National Test Facility at Falcon AFB Colorado as a component of the 14th Air Force to assist air component commanders in understanding and applying space systems in support of air operations following lessons learnt during Desert Storm. The Squadron deployed Air Force Space Support Teams to bring space expertise to
expeditionary air forces and air operations centers around the world including significant contributions during Joint Endeavour Deny Flight Desert Fox Desert Thunder and Allied Force. 76 SOPS was re-designated 76 Space Operations Squadron on 21 November 1995 and was assigned to 614 Space Operations Group on 28 August 1998. The Squadron moved to Peterson AFB Colorado on 1 December 1999 and was reassigned to 21 Operations Group on 31 March 2000. The Squadron was renamed 76 Space Control Squadron on 22 January 2001 and was inactivated on 22 January 2008.

On 1 February 2009 the squadron was reformed as 76 Fighter Squadron FS at Moody AFB Georgia with A-10 Thunderbolt IIs is assigned to 476 Fighter Group United States Air Force Reserve.
