Squadron History

70 Fighter Squadron was inactivated following its war service on 26 December 1945. The Squadron was reactivated on 30 September 1975 as 70 Tactical Fighter Squadron at Moody AFB Georgia with F 4 Phantom II aircraft under 347 Tactical Fighter Wing specializing in air to ground attack using precision guided weapons and conducted frequent exercise deployments in the US and overseas.

70 TFS transitioned to F-16 Fighting Falcon in1987 and was deployed to Ramstein AB West Germany from 29 August to 28 September 1989 where it was attached to 86 Tactical Fighter Wing. The Squadron was reassigned to 347 Operations Group on 1 May 1991 and redesignated 70 Fighter Squadron on 1 November 1991 and carried out deployments to Southwest Asia to support Operation Southern Watch over Iraq and other contingencies. On 1 July 1994 347 Fighter Wing was redesignated 347 Wing and was reorganised as a force projection air land composite wing gaining 52 Airlift Squadron. 70 FS was retasked for close air support and converted to A 10 Thunderbolt Warthog aircraft in 1995.

With the decision to end 347 Wings tasking as a composite Wing 70 Fighter Squadron was inactivated on 30 June 2000 and 347 Wing was reactivated as 347 Rescue Wing on 1 May 2001.
