4017 Combat Crew Training Squadron was activated at Castle AFB on 8 January 1955 assigned to 93 Bombardment wing to undertake B 52 crew training following the Wings receipt of the first production B 52B Stratofortress bombers. 4017 CCTS was equipped with B 52B in June 1955. As SACs primary B 52 aircrew training organization the Wings training mission became too great a task for just one squadron and the Wings other three squadrons 328 329 and 330 Bombardment Squadrons took over the flight training role with 4017 Combat Crew Training Squadron taking responsibility for ground instruction and overall administration of the training program in 1956. 4017 CCTS operated SACs B 52 Gunnery School.
With increasing SAC involvement in the Vietnam War it activated a Replacement Training Unit RTU within the 4017 Combat Crew Training Squadron on 15 April 1968 to convert and qualify B 52E B 52F B 52G and B 52H bomber aircrews to fly the B 52D used by SAC for operations in Southeast Asia. 4017 CCTS was inactivated on 1 July 1986.
This patch dates from 1965.
