Headquarters Washington Air National Guard established Operating Location BA at Camp Murray to provide support services to Western Washington with its Consolidated Base Personnel Office activated in April 1983 with staff relocating from 141 Air Refueling Wing at Fairchild AFB to Camp Murray. Accounting and Finance Operation became active and began providing comptroller support and services for Western Washington in 1986.

With operations and support increasing OLBA was upgraded and restructured with its own commander and redesignated Detachment 1 Headquarters WA ANG in July 1990. Det 1 took command over 111 Air Support Operations Squadron and 116 Air Support Operations Squadron ASOS providing Air Liaison Officers support airmen and close air support Tactical Air Control Party forward air controllers embedded with Army fighting units on the ground as the Air Support Operations Center ASOC to control the execution of Air Force air and space assets in direct support of land operations and to act as the liaison between Air Force and Army elements to provide ground commanders with Air Force assets in close combat guiding weapons to targets. Detachment 1 was also assigned 116 Weather Flight which obtains analyses and reports on weather conditions during operations. 

Detachment 1 has mobilized its units and deployed Air Support Operations elements to support active service units on operations in the US and worldwide including deploying personnel to Bosnia and the National Guard Bureau to support operations in Kosovo during the 1990s and deploying units for Forward Air Control FAC combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and for training with Army ground forces in Korea Okinawa Hawaii Japan Thailand the Dominican Republic Haiti and several other countries in South America.
