History  

76 Air Transport Squadron Medium was activated at Kelly AFB Texas on 20 July 1952 assigned to 1700 Air Transport Group equipped with C 54 Skymaster transport aircraft to undertake worldwide airlift operations. The Squadron relocated to Charleston AFB South Carolina reassigned to1608 Air Transport Group on 1 February 1956. The Squadron reequipped with C 121 Constellation transport aircraft and transported UN troops to Suez Canal in November 1956.  

76 ATSM reequipped with C 130 Hercules in 1963 before being redesignated 76 Military Airlift Squadron MAS and reassigned to 437 Military Airlift Wing on 8 January 1966 transitioning to C 141 Starlifter aircraft at the same time and began transport support operations to Southeast Asia for the Vietnam War. Transport operations to Vietnam ended with the US withdrawal from the war in 1973 although the Squadron returned for the evacuation of Saigon in May 1975. 

76 MAS took part in Operation Urgent Fury the invasion of Grenada from October to December 1983 and Operation Just Cause the invasion of Panama from 18 to 28 December 1989. The Squadron undertook airlift operations to Southwest Asia for Operations Desert Shield from August 1990 continuing through Operation Desert Storm from January to March 1991. The Squadron was redesignated 76 Airlift Squadron and reassigned to 437 Operations Group on 1 October 1991. 

76 Airlift Squadron was relocated to Ramstein AB Germany on 1 October 1993 was reassigned to 86 Operations Group and reequipped with C 20A Gulfstream III C 21A Learjet CT 43 Bobcat aircraft retasked to provide operational support airlift special mission executive airlift in Europe previously undertaken be 58 AS. The Squadron retired its CT 43 Bobcats and added one C 9C Nightingale converted for VIP transport in 1996. Executive missions were undertaken for Operation Enduring Freedom Afghanistan from 2001. The Squadrons C 20A Gulfstream IIIs were replaced by C 20H Gulfstream IV aircraft in 2002 and the C 9C Nightingale was retired in 2003. Special missions were undertaken for Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2003. 76 AS added C 40B Clipper special mission aircraft for commanders and government officials in 2004. The Squadron undertook missions in support of the Libyan Operation New Dawn and Operation Odyssey Dawn.
