Squadron History
58 Military Airlift Squadron MAS re-activated at Ramstein AB on 1 September 1977 with VC 140 Jet Star VC 135 Stratolifter Beech C 12s and UH 1N Helicopters providing global cargo passenger airlift and VIP Special Air Missions transport as part of 435 Military Airlift Wing MAW.
The Special Air Mission was created to transport VIP government employees between military bases providing the highest level of Distinguished
Visitor travel meeting stringent schedule and protocol requirements while under intense media scrutiny.
The Squadron was re-assigned to 322 Air Division on 23 June 1978 and CT 39 Sabreliners and C 21 Huron were added to the fleet during that year. On 1 August 1983 58 MAS was assigned to 608 Military Airlift Group and C 21 Learjets replaced the CT 39 Sabreliners in 1984. C 20 Gulfstream III were received in 1987 with CT 43A executive transports joining in 1988. The Squadron was re-designated 58 Airlift Squadron
on 1 June 1992 becoming part of 86 Operations Group and was inactivated on 1 October
1993.
