Squadron History 

91 Air Refueling Squadron Medium was activated on 16 April 1950 at Barksdale AFB Louisiana equipped with KB 29P Superfortress tankers to support Strategic Air Command operations worldwide under 91 Strategic Reconnaissance Group. The Squadron relocated to Lockbourne AFB Ohio on 11 September 1951 and reequipped with KC 97 Stratotanker in 1953. 91 AREFS M deployed to Nouasseur AB French Morocco under 5 Air Division 12 January to 26 February 1954 Goose AB Labrador 6 October to 12 November 1954 and Ernest Harmon AFB Newfoundland 10 July to October 1955 under Northeast Air Command. 91 AREF M was reassigned to 376 Bombardment Wing on 1 December 1957 and reequipped with KC 135A Stratotanker aircraft in 1963. 

The Squadron was redesignated 91 Air Refueling Squadron Heavy on 1 January 1963 reassigned to 301 Air Refueling Wing on 15 June 1964 and deployed crews and aircraft to Southeast Asia to refuel tactical aircraft and B 52 Stratofortresses involved in combat in Vietnam. The Squadron relocated to McConnell AFB Kansas on 30 June 1971 assigned initially to 47 Air Division on 1 July 1971 then 14 Air Division 1 April 1972 12 Strategic Missile Division 1 August 1972 and then 384 Air Refueling Wing later 384 Bombardment Wing on 1 December 1972. The Squadron refueled aircraft participating in the Grenada rescue mission between October and November 1983. 91 AREFS H was inactivated on 1 October 1987. 

91 Air Refueling Squadron Heavy reactivated on 5 January 1988 at Malmstrom AFB Montana equipped with KC 135R Stratotanker under 301 Air Refueling Wing. The Squadron supported coalition forces during the 1991 Gulf War and was redesignated 91 Air Refueling Squadron and reassigned to 301 Operations Group on 1 September 1991. 91 AREF was reassigned to 43 Operations Group on 1 June 1992 and performed worldwide aerial refueling for bombers airlift and fighter aircraft as part of Tanker Task Force TTF passing to 43 Air Refueling Wing on 1 July 1994. 

91 Air Refueling Squadron relocated to MacDill Air Force Base Florida on 1 October 1996 under 6 Operations Group 6 Air Mobility Wing in support of worldwide operations. Since 2002 the Squadron has also refueled fighter aircraft providing security for the southeastern United States.
