History
667 Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron Activated on 8 December 1949 at Hamilton AFB California under 542d Aircraft Control and Warning Group providing General Surveillance Radar cover for the air defense of Iceland and the North Atlantic and was inactivated on 6 February 1952.
The Squadron was reactivated on 1 July 1952 under 65th Air Division Defense at Langanes Air Station Iceland and was reassigned to Iceland Air Defense Force on 8 March 1954 and 1400 Operations Group on 18 December 1955.
667 ACW Squadron relocated to Hofn Air Station Iceland on 1 July 1960 and reassigned to Air Forces Iceland. The radar equipment continuously searched the skies more than 200 miles from the shores of Iceland 24 hours a day 365 days a year for any intruding aircraft and tracked numerous Russian aircraft while guarding the North American Continent from surprise airborne attack. The Squadron controlled 57 FIS Interceptor aircraft based at Keflavik Naval Air Station Iceland and when an unidentified aircraft was detected the Interceptors were scrambled to identify these aircraft and take necessary action to defend the citizens of both Iceland and the United States.
The Squadron was inactivated on 30 September 1988.
